Update on the Six Ponds Resource Management Initiative
Please join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) for an update on the status of the Six Ponds Resource Management Initiative and what lies ahead for 2024.
This year, for the first time, water quality data was collected in all Six Ponds. Walker’s, Hawksnest and Cornelius Pond are included in the new Freshwater Initiative launched by APCC and the Cape Cod Commission. The program includes a three-year monitoring commitment followed by an analysis of pond water quality and seasonal mixing. Water quality data for Aunt Edie’s, Oliver’s and Black Ponds will be collected under the auspices of the Town of Harwich Natural Resources Department. HCT is grateful to the dedication of many stewardship volunteers who assisted with monitoring this season.
Carole Ridley, Coordinator for the Six Ponds Resource Management Initiative will discuss the aspects of water quality that are being measured and why, and how this information can help inform management of the Six Ponds area.
The Six Ponds Resource Management Initiative is a community-based planning effort aiming to deepen our understanding of what we can do to safeguard this fragile stretch of land and water resources for future generations. Building off of HCT’s Priority Ponds Project, this initiative will expand comprehensive resource management planning in the area, including stewardship measures that reinforce the purposes of the DCPC and enhance the benefits of resource, habitat, and wildlife protection. This initiative is being undertaken in phases involving comprehensive assessments and the preparation and implementation of a Six Ponds Resource Management Plan. Join us to learn more!
