Harwich Cranberry History Walks

Join HCT volunteer Gerry Beetham for a visit to the cranberry bog at Harwich Conservation Trust's (HCT) Sand Pond Woodlands to learn about the history of cranberry farming in Harwich. Explore how commercial cranberry farming started and learn about the harvest process.

Discuss the challenges facing local growers today like over supply from the Midwest and Canada which has contributed to lower cranberry prices. Some growers can still turn a profit while market forces have caused others to exit the industry and sell their lands. HCT and the Town have turned retired bogs into conservation destinations with walking trails and ecological restoration opportunities.

At HCT's Sand Pond Woodlands, the bog is leased to local grower Ray Thacher who manages the property. If we are lucky, we will see and photograph the cranberry harvest, so be sure to bring your camera.
